From Brown to Blonde & Back Again
We recently saw Jessica Simpson as a brunette when she was with her former beau John Mayer. Her copycat style looked stunning, but soon after the breakup, she went back to her signature blonde style.
A word to the wise: lightening your color from a dark shade is best left to the professionals. You will more than likely end up with a botch job if done yourself, so call up your colorist for an appointment on this one. Your colorist will typically have to lighten you over a series of appointments if your current shade is a deep brown or black and you are going back to blonde. If you want it all in one day, be prepared to stay throughout the entire day. The colorist will lighten your strands by breaking up the color with color remover or doing a series of highlights to lift out the dark color. You will then have to have your hair toned to the appropriate shade and to ward off any brassy undertones. Going from dark to light can be done, just be ready for it to take some time.
Lindsay Lohan is the perfect example of a color chameleon. She has gone from being a natural red-head to blonde, brown, black and back to blonde again. Prior to having raven colored strands, Lindsay was subtle in her changes. She slowly, but surely, got her red locks brightened to a platinum blonde ‘do before she went to the dark side.
Switching your hair color from light to dark seems simple, but it takes a few key components to make it last. When going from light to dark, you may want to use a shade that is lighter than the actual shade you want it to be. The reason for this is that your hair may be extremely porous from continual lightening of your locks and can ‘grab’ the color too fast, making it a deeper hue than you wanted. Another factor in making the switch is to use a filler. A filler is something you can purchase at a beauty supply, which literally fills in the porous sections of your hair making the hair color go on more evenly.
Beyonce has also shown us a variety of hair colors, as well as a variety of different styles. Her quick changes are probably from the use of wigs and hair extensions.
Wigs and hair extensions are a great way to keep your current hair in a healthy condition while trying out different colors. You can still be a color chameleon but without damaging your ‘do. Try extensions if you want the look of highlights or a darker shade underneath. And a good wig can give you a whole new look.
So as you can see, changing your hair color drastically can be done, just try and avoid changing your color as often as your mood changes!
