We turned to this year’s 2007 MTV Movie Awards for tips from Hollywood on the hottest updos of the season.  From Mandy Moore’s classic side part to Lauren Conrad’s sleek pull-back ponytail, getting the perfect updo isn’t as complicated as it used to be.  Thanks to the latest hair tools and snappy accessories, you can pull off your own star style look with the just a few strategic moves!

Sleek and Chic Pull-Back Ponytail

Lauren Conrad pulled off this classic look with perfect balance to her fancy gown at the MTV Movie Awards.  This style works best for medium-long hair, and is ideal for thin hair types since you’ll be teasing the hair on top for added volume.

Get Lauren Conrad’s look with these simple steps:

  1. Wash and dry hair using a straightening shampoo.

  2. Blow dry hair completely with a leave-in heat protectant spray, and part down the middle using a wide paddle brush to smooth out all ends.

  3. Use the paddle brush with a ceramic flat iron and begin straightening as close to the roots as possible; be sure to use plenty of heat protectant spray!

  4. After hair is straightened, use a comb to separate a half inch section along your forehead (as if you were separating bangs).  Pull this section forward over your face to get it out of the way.

  5. Pick up the remaining hair on the top of your head in small half inch sections and use a small comb to tease roots (comb hair down toward the scalp in a small rhythmic motion) until you have covered the area from forehead to crown.  This will naturally create volume at the roots.

  6. Use hair spray on the teased area at the roots.

  7. Smooth the section you pulled forward back over your teased hair and gather hair once again at the nape of the neck, securing firmly with a ponytail wrap or barrette.

  8. Spray with hair spray just above the forehead and gently pull up with your fingers for added volume.

  9. Smooth out the entire look with a straightening balm or gel to hold this sleek look in place!

The Classic Side Part with Curls

This style works well for medium to long lengths and all hair textures.  If you have thin hair, you’ll want to find a fortified thickening conditioner after shampooing.

Get Mandy Moore’s tousled, but stellar look with these easy steps:

  1. Wash and dry hair using a curl enhancing shampoo.

  2. Blow dry hair with a leave-in heat protectant spray, parting down the middle and using a large paddle brush to smooth out roots and ends.

  3. Spray heat protectant spray on the ends and use a medium-barreled curling iron to curl 1” wide strands up to the half-way point on your head.

  4. Use hair spray on the curls to secure shape.

  5. After curling is complete, part the hair on preferred side of head (a middle part works well for this style too).

  6. Gather hair close to the nape of the neck, about 1” above where hairline ends, and clip with a pretty barrette.

  7. Use bobby pins to pull some of the curls up on the sides around the barrette and secure to your head, being sure to hide the bobby pins under the curls.

  8. Smooth out the look with a light touch of smoothing balm on the curl ends and to take care of flyaways in the front.

  9. Finish with a light spray of hair spray.

The Natural Curl Lover’s Updo

Making the best of naturally curly hair gives you an excuse to create a cute and flirty updo.  Vanessa Hudgens pulled off a fun look to offset her tropical-printed gown here at the MTV Movie Awards.

Get Vanessa Hudgens’ updo with these easy steps:

  1. Wash and dry hair as usual (your curls are an asset to you here!)

  2. Part hair down the middle.  Then use your fingers to gently pull your hair back toward crown starting about 3” from forehead.

  3. Allow the first 3” of hair that you left parted above the forehead to fall naturally at the sides, and tuck behind the ears.

  4. Gather the rest of the hair at the back of the neck and twist up into a French twist.  Secure with several bobby pins (if needed) and a barrette up at the crown.

  5. Spray your loose strands in front lightly with hair spray.  Tuck behind the ears, or let them hang loosely if they don’t reach the ears to frame the face.  If length is too long, clip together on the side of the head using a bobby pin.

  6. Fluff up pieces at the top of the barrette to let curls fall naturally.  Use hairspray to secure hair in place!

There you have it, three of the best updos from the 2007 MTV Movie Awards for you to pull off with your summer ensembles.  Go ahead, show off those buff shoulders and arms you’ve worked hard for this year; an updo is the perfect way to make the most of this year’s hottest trends!
