Designers Are Raising Awareness With Organic Clothing
Have you ever thought about what is in the food you eat? With organic food, there’s no longer a reason to wonder. Organic foods tend to be more and more popular these days with stores like Whole Foods and Wild Oats, and they are chock full of things that are good for you (unlike preservatives and words you can’t pronounce). But what about the clothing you wear, have you ever thought about what it is made of? Now there are designers trying to change the world one organic skirt at a time. House of Petals in West Hollywood, California strives to offer organically grown flowers to the people of Los Angeles, and they recently took “organic” one step further. On July 13th, the couture shop held the first ever ECOPETAL Fashion Show, showcasing the designs of California designers dedicated to organic materials and fair labor. All the designers involved are working to create eco-friendly clothing – good for the environment and beautiful on you. Their hope is to launch a larger appreciation for the environment, and to get others inspired to create organic clothing. Those involved in the ECOPETAL show also stress that by wearing their designs, you become a part of that mission and a way to spread the world about eco-friendly organic clothing.

The ambiance of the ECOPETAL show (everything from the music to the sand and rose petals on the runway) created the feeling of being a part of a yoga class on the beach. The tranquil mood was set from the very beginning with a women standing with folded hands motionless.

As the show continued we saw a variety of designs in several fabrics that would never bring up thoughts of “organic.” Deborah Lindquist offered corsets made of recycled materials and vintage fabrics. Organic Leather designed a stunning wedding dress made completely of leather from organically raised animals and organically tanned hides. Del Forte offered jeans for the show made 100% in the USA of only the highest quality organic cotton denim. The women’s clothing ranged from silk dresses, to hemp skirt sets.

Even the men had some interesting items, including shorts made of hemp and perfectly fitting Del Forte jeans. The show concluded with a short yoga demonstration and an acoustic guitar performance. It would have been difficult to leave not feeling inspired and in favor of organic everything!

There will be a boutique at the House of Petals running all week from July 13th to July 22nd. The boutique offers fashions from all the designers involved in the show including Velvet Leaf, Sweet Skins, Anna Cohen, Energy Muse Jewelry, Ginger Che, Speesees (adorable eco-friendly childrens clothing!), Deborah Lindquist, Natural High, Indigenous, and No Enemy.
It is admirable to see so many designers working together to make people aware of that there are other options out there for eco-friendly clothing. Everything from the ECOPETAL show was organic: the food, the wine, and yes, even the toilet paper in the restroom! If you would like to see more of these organic designers, visit the House of Petals website and click on "House of Petals Events." See what these designers are all about, and let’s all work to change the world one outfit at a time!
