Every girl needs an accessory or two to add panache to her outfit. I’ll never forget when brooches became popular once again last year. It all seemed to start for me when I saw Sarah Jessica Parker dancing around in pink in the Gap commercials, she was the epitome of the feminine lady I longed to be inside. Her sweaters were covered in a cluster of shining brooches and I thought it was the most lovely accessory I had ever seen, and I immediately ran out to buy five of my own.

One bad thing about the brooch however is the pin that puts an everlasting hole in your most treasured garments. Not to fret ladies, there’s a new alternative to the stylish and sophisticated brooches of old. Jewelry designer Detra Kay has just introduced “Brooches that Bloom,” a vivid collection of semi-precious stone antique flower brooches that securely fasten onto most any fabrication (even leather) without damage. How is this possible you ask? “Maggies” and “Margarets,” (as these upscale brooches have been dubbed) fasten onto lapels, shoes, belts, bags and more via a high intensity magnet mounted on the back of each vintage brooch.

"Maggies and Margarets are one of a kind, hand carved semi-precious stones adorned with genuine vintage Swarovski crystal centers which we seek out from around the world," says designer Detra Kay. "They are extremely versatile, can be worn as earrings or on a suit lapel at the office and will just as easily add crisp, defined elegance to a summer tank top." The "Brooches that Bloom" collection of “Maggies” and “Margarets”
range from $50 to $195 retail.

In addition, Detra Kay offers an extensive collection of versatile semi-precious necklaces ranging from $300 to $3,000 retail.

"DK Spring/Summer 2006 is all about celebrating the fabulous colors found in natural gemstones. Semi-precious stone flowers are a fantastic way to brighten summer wardrobes. I design for women who want to get noticed for their impeccable taste and bold, fun style sense, and these refined brooches most definitely stand out, in an incredible, fashionista way," says Kay. Now that to me says Sarah Jessica Parker and the ultimate in femininity!
