On Valentine’s Day we are swept away with the significant others in our lives. On Valentine’s Day, love is in the air;cupids wink as they fire their benevolent arrows of relationship-passion into our hearts.Yes, Valentine’s Day can be one of the loveliest days of the year or, for some, one of the loneliest days of the year.
Amidst the marriage proposals and flowers and candy and jewelry and dinners that symbolize the essence of Valentine’s Day, let’s take time to consider that this is a fortuitous time to salute the first and most important love of our lives:ourselves.Self-love inspires us to fall in love with our lives and gain a passionate perspective of our true selves.Additionally, self-love is a prerequisite for loving others and being loved by others.I’m speaking of healthy relationship-love rather than fatal attractions that are akin to potent karma cocktails.
Because self-love and self-esteem are so important to the outcome of our lives and relationships, I propose a pre-Valentine holiday on the 13th of February. This is a day of self-love, and a kick-off to the relationship bonanza of Valentine’s Day.On February 13th, we should bestow upon ourselves the usual treats of jewelry, fashion, decadent desserts, fine wine, furs or whatever else blows up your skirt.
We can utilize this self-love-fest on the 13th to flatter and adore ourselves for all the qualities that comprise who we distinctly and truly are.Or, if you don’t know who you are or things just feel off at this point in your life, you can use this day to discover more about yourself. If the theory is true that we attract what we believe we are, then the pre-Valentine’s kick-off could prove to be more important than Valentine’s Day itself.
Some of the masters of self-love are evident through their love toward others and, in turn, how much they are loved by others.Gwen Stefani and Beyonce both generously and confidently infuse themselves to artistic endeavors. This takes guts and high self-esteem; they believe in themself and so they apply themselves into their art and also into the world through worthy causes.Gwen Stefani contributes herself to Save the Children and AIDS; she also worked hard for the devastated tsunami victims of last year.Beyonce is a constant force for the Ronald McDonald House and the Carousel of Hope.
Gwen and Beyonce both have significant others in their lives (Gavin Rossdale and Jay Z, respectively).Gwen and Beyonce have intimate and mass appeal.Self-love and self-esteem don’t mean that doubt or fear never shake their fists; instead, Gwen and Beyonce love themselves enough to follow their hearts in spite of doubt or fear—you have to love yourself in order to achieve this.
Whether you have romantic plans on Valentine’s Day or not, celebrate yourself on February 13th.After all, you are the most important person in your life.It is through love of self that you can truly love someone else and romance the rest of the world, too.
