Summer is a great time to enjoy an icy, refreshing cocktail, and you don’t need alcohol to make it great. In fact, try these healthy cocktails and you will wind up feeling better the next day, not worse!
Start your cocktails with plenty of ice, which will help keep you hydrated. If you have a cocktail shaker use it, but if not then just make sure you stir the beverages up very well before you drink them. And don’t forget garnishes, which make everything more fun: buy a package of tiny umbrellas at the dollar store, top your drinks with a sliced blood orange or just throw a couple of cherries on top to feel extra special.
SUMMER SUNSET: Combine ice with ½ orange juice, ½ seltzer water and a big tablespoon of grenadine. The heavy cherry syrup will sink to the bottom, giving your drink the look of a summer sunset.
GREEN MACHINE: Mix a handful of ice with a shot of wheat grass, add ½ grape juice and ½ seltzer water for a punch drink that is really, really good for you!
POMEGRANATE PUNCH: Pomegranates contain high levels of antioxidants, which help protect your body against cancer. Combine ice with ½ pomegranate juice, ¼ orange juice and ¼ pineapple juice for a refreshing and healthy treat.
PINEAPPLE BREEZE: Pina coladas are loaded with calories, but you can get nearly the same effect when you combine ice with ½ fresh pineapple juice, ½ coconut juice and a splash of seltzer water for a bit of fizz on top.
SKINNY BANANA: This one requires a blender. Break a banana into small chunks and freeze. Once frozen, throw the pieces into a blender along with ½ cup soy or low-fat milk, a handful of ice and a squirt of chocolate syrup. You will feel like you are having a milkshake, but you will skip several hundred grams of fat.
CHERRY SURPRISE: Cherries also contain very high levels of antioxidants. Combine pure cherry juice with a splash of peach nectar and a splash of seltzer water. Throw in a couple of maraschino cherries for garnish and you have a powerful cocktail!
BLUEBERRY BEACH: Blueberries and all berries should be a part of your regular diet. Throw a half-pint of blueberries in a blender with a handful of ice and a heaping tablespoon of unflavored, natural yogurt. Add a teaspoon of honey and you will have a delicious, creamy drink!
SUNRISE SWEETS: The flavors of the tropics combine to create paradise in this cocktail. Mix together equal parts mango juice, orange juice and pineapple juice for a sweet and tart drink that will deliver the vitamin C you need to start your day off right.
