The holiday season revelries are underway, but it can be hard to feel the holiday spirit when you’re alone or single over the festive season. Family gatherings, holiday parties and other events can make you feel stressed, anxious or self-conscious about your singlehood.

Fortunately, there are several ways to enjoy the holidays when you’re single.
Don’t deny how you feel. You may feel especially emotional over the holiday season and feel more self-conscious about your singlehood than usual. Accept who you are and don’t feel like you have to do anything to escape how you feel.

Here are some coping strategies for helping you get through the season with a little joy in your heart:

IF YOU ARE SINGLE OVER THE HOLIDAYS YOU CAN:

Head to a singles party for New Years. Find out where you can join a group of singles for a New Years meetup or other events where you can relax, let loose and just enjoy the season without the pressure of being in a relationship. This will give you a chance to socialize with some new people and enjoy the festivities.

Cook a meal with friends. Invite some girlfriends over to enjoy a good meal together. You can host a holiday potluck, or decide to host a holiday dinner for a fun social event.

Volunteer to babysit some kids. If your friends need to take care of holiday shopping and other holiday duties, they’re probably looking for a babysitter who can help out for a few hours. Volunteer to take the kids to the ice rink, host a holiday baking event at your place or ask the kids to help you decorate.

Volunteer at the local church or community center. Many churches or community centers in the area are looking for volunteers to decorate the venue, or to donate time for special holiday events. This can be a fun way to meet new people and do something festive outside the house for the holiday season.

Limit family time if it makes you feel uncomfortable. If visiting the family or attending certain holiday events is making you feel too stressed out, limit the visit to a few short hours and move onto another activity. There are no rules that require you to stay at a gathering for the entire time, so make the most of the time with family and others, and head out to your next destination.

Decorate your space. Don’t miss out on the fun of the holidays! Decorate your apartment or house with even the basic holiday décor such as a tree, twinkle lights and other basic accessories. Sprucing up the place can put you in a good mood and help you connect to the spirit of the season.

Enjoy the holiday lights. Make a point about driving out to see the holiday lights, attend public events and celebrate the season. Attending events as a couple isn’t a prerequisite to celebrating the season, so make an effort to get out and explore.
