THE IMPORTANCE OF BREAKFAST

Learn Why You Should Love Breakfast and Eat It Everyday!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We have all heard it, we all know it, and yet millions of women continue to skip breakfast with the false belief that doing so will help them lose weight. In reality, people who skip breakfast are 4.5 times as likely to be overweight, which is great motivation for you to make time every single day for a healthy and nutritious breakfast.

Eating a breakfast rich in protein and fiber sets the tone for a day of healthy eating. Those who skip this important meal are much more likely to reach for a mid-morning snack that is high in sugar, caffeine, or both. Moreover, a hungry morning makes for bad moods, and grouchy breakfast-skippers are more likely to overindulge at lunchtime with foods high in calories and fat. Remember, the number one cause of overeating is undereating.

The Importance of Breakfast

Children who eat breakfast do much better in school, and adults who eat breakfast are able to focus much better at work. Improved concentration and performance are just a few of the beneficial aspects of this most important meal, which has also lowers cholesterol and leads to a more nutritionally complete diet that is higher in nutrients, vitamins and minerals.

Eating breakfast also helps you lose weight. An early meal kick starts your metabolism and revs up your energy for the day. As you sleep, your body is fasting, which is where we get the world for our morning meal (break-fast). Eating a morning meal replenishes your body’s glucose stores, and if you decide not to eat breakfast and prolong your fast, the body responds by increasing its insulin response. This causes sugar cravings and increased fat storage, both of which lead to weight gain.

Not all breakfasts are created equal, however, and you should strive to include fiber and protein with your morning meal. Anything made of pure carbohydrates (like doughnuts, pastries, and sugary cereals) is a big mistake as your blood sugar levels will spike up and then drastically drop. This prompts you to reach for a mid-morning snack, usually of the unhealthy variety. Another bad breakfast choice is a frou-frou coffee drink like mocha shakes or frappuccinos; in reality these are just milkshakes with a shot or two of espresso thrown in. If you must have your caffeine, drink it black. After a few days of no cream and no sugar, you will probably find that you do not miss these extra, empty calories.
