Nowadays, wigs are used for fashion and for function.  Women who need them for hair loss or women who just want to experiment with different hair styles are getting a wide variety of very cute pieces to choose from. Celebrities like Lil’ Kim, Britney Spears, Cher, Dolly Parton, Lady Gaga, and Jamie Lee Curtis have kept wigs current and in style, rockin’ different color wigs to numerous red carpet events. Ladies, wigs are not just for Halloween anymore!

Here’s how to find the perfect wig for you, what to look for when purchasing, and how to wear and care for it. No matter if you need a wig for function or just want one for fun; you still need to know what to look for when buying a wig and how to wear it well and with style.

TYPES OF WIGS

Synthetic & Human Hair

There are two different types of wigs, synthetic and human hair. They differ mainly by price, texture, and care.  Most of those fun costume wigs are made from synthetic material, however, since wigs have become so popular in the recent years, there are many companies that cater to women who want realistic looking human hair wigs. These wigs come in a range of different color options.

The major differences between the two types are cost -synthetic wigs are generally less expensive-, style -synthetic wigs come pre-styled and most human hair wigs usually need altered by a professional stylist before and during wear-, and care - synthetic wigs should not be washed often and will maintain their style with just a bit of combing, while human hair wigs, just like your real hair, must be washed regularly and styled each time they are washed.

Monofilament Wigs

Other types of wigs are monofilament wigs. They are constructed from wig caps with hair attached and distributed evenly across the cap. They tend to look more natural, but also cost more money.  I had a monofilament wig made for me directly on my head with human hair.  It took a bit of time with me sitting still but the end result was a very natural looking and stylish artificial head of hair.  It’s a great option if you are looking for something relatively long term that is unique to you. Once it’s made on your head, no one will be able to put it on and it fit like it fits on you.

Lace Front & Full Lace Wigs

One last option is lace front and full lace wigs. They are available in an assortment of lengths, textures, colors, and price points. Lace wigs are also great hair replacement options because they do not damage your hair like other hair extension techniques, such as weaves, fusion, and strand-by-strand.  Lace wigs are usually made with good quality remy hair and are made to appear like the hair is growing from your actual scalp.  You can also get custom made lace wigs to suit your specific needs.  And because lace wigs are so natural and fashionable, they are popular among the Hollywood crowd, being worn by celebs such as Kelly Rowland and Tyra Banks to name a few.

Things to Consider Before Buying A Wig

Before buying a wig, especially without trying it on, you need to consider your head size, the wig color, and the wig style. A woman's head usually average’s between 21.5 and 22.5 inches in size. Less than 21 inches is considered size small and over 22.5 inches are size large. Measure your head size by running a measuring tape along your hairline, the forehead, behind the ears and around the back of the neck. While choosing a wig color, remember that if you are ordering online, colors are often altered on a computer screen and can be quite inaccurate. So, if you are concerned, contact the company directly for advice and/or find out where you can see the wig in person at a retail store near you.  Wigs also come in an assortment of styles, from short to long and curly to straight. If you purchase a human hair wig, you can then have it cut and styled by a professional stylist to get the perfect look for you.
