KERRY WASHINGTON HAIR: Step 1
Always start by moisturizing the hair in the shower with a conditioner made exclusively for very course, dry, and/or African American hair. Softness and frizz control is the main priority for this Kerry Washington hairstyle. Vita Amazonia makes an amazing Afro Moisturizing Conditioner that is enriched with keratin, peach oil, silicon, and shea butter to condition and detangle curly, permed, or African-American hair. Rinse hair thoroughly, towel dry, and apply a heat styling product, like Nexxus Heat Protexx Heat Protection Styling Spray, to protect hair and prevent damage from the heat styling products you will be using. This will also help in preventing that annoying frizz and encourage smoothness.
Either let hair air dry naturally or use a low setting on your blow dryer to gently dry the hair. Direct the air flow downwards and blow dry the hair from root to end, gently following the flow of air with a large comb or brush to help straighten and detangle. Use an Ionic anti-static 1875 watt dryer for the best results.
When the hair is completely dry, begin to run a wide flatiron, such as Hot Tools 2" Ceramic Titanium Flat Iron, through your hair in small sections to create that soft straight look before you begin to curl. Again follow your iron closely, this time with a small tease comb, to ensure that every strand is frizz free and polished. Pay special attention to the front of the hair and bangs to make sure the hair in those areas are completely straight and smooth.
After hair is completely straight and smooth, start curling the hair in small sections using a 2 inch barrel curling iron, like Hot Tools Professional Spring Curling Iron 2 inch. Spray each piece of hair with a firm hold hair spray, like Aquage Finishing Spray, before each curl to add hold and shine. Roll the iron just from the middle to ends of the hair sections. Avoid taking the curl too high on the head or you will get more tight springy curls instead of Kerry’s loose flowing curls. Also using the larger barrel iron will create larger looser curls instead of a tight spiral curl. Always start at the back and work your way forward, directing your iron backwards so the curls are pulling away from the face. If you have bangs like Kerry’s, keep them as straight and flat on the forehead as possible. Do not curl the bangs!
