Fat is usually the first to disappear from your daily plate when you’re watching your weight, but is this diet strategy really good for you? Nutritionists say we need to eat a small amount of fat each day to stay healthy, ward off cravings and enjoy the benefits of a balanced diet. Here’s the 411 on eating the right types of fats that will keep your diet on the right track:

WHY GOOD FATS ARE IMPORTANT FOR YOUR DIET

If you’re trying to cut down on your caloric intake for the day, you immediately become more susceptible to cravings. Cravings a surefire sign that you’re missing some essential nutrients in your diet, and for most dieters, this nutrient tends to be fat.  Many dieters cut out foods like olive oil, avocados and nuts to save on calories, but this can be a huge mistake. Nixing these important foods out of your diet can leave you more hungry and vulnerable to a binge. The solution?  Add an assortment of healthy fats to your meals throughout the week, so you’re less hungry and much more satisfied with each meal.

HEALTHY SOURCES OF GOOD FATS

Here are some of the best sources of healthy fats. Remember that many people cut these foods out of their diets completely because they think it’s ‘bad’ to eat even a modest amount of fat.

GOOD FAT #1: Olive oil

Just a tablespoon of olive oil is all you need to dress up a salad, or cook up your stir fry with. Olive oil doesn’t contain the artery-clogging fats found in other types of cooking oil, and adding it to your favorite healthy meal will make you feel fuller, longer.

GOOD FAT #2: Walnuts

Nuts contain both protein and fat, and are essential for healthy hair, nails and skin. Just a handful of walnuts can make you feel full and keep hunger pangs at bay for hours. Plus, one serving has less than 100 calories; it’s easy to squeeze it into any dieter’s snack list!

GOOD FAT #3: Flaxseeds

A great source of Omega-3s, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil are a nutritious addition to snacks and meals. Add flaxseeds to yogurt or a smoothie, and use flaxseed oil in cooking or baking to get your daily requirement of this healthy fat.

GOOD FAT #4: Fatty fish

Tuna and salmon are your best bets for getting a healthy dose of fat with dinner. Both of these contain Omega-3s and essential amino acids that will keep you feeling full for hours after the meal, and may even help you lose weight. Make sure you’re enjoying at least one or two servings of fatty fish per week to keep your skin, hair, and even your brain in great shape!

GOOD FAT #5: Guacamole

If you’re tired of hummus or fat-free dips to accompany your baked tortilla chips, consider eating guacamole. Freshly prepared guacamole made with avocados and a few seasonings will fill you up fast, and provide you with a good dose of healthy fat.
