Embrace the “90/10” philosophy.
Set yourself up for success by approaching your daily diet with a 90/10 ratio. This means 90 percent of the time you should fill up on foods like lean proteins and several fruits and vegetables, such as Florida grapefruit, spinach and broccoli. It also is important to reward yourself. For the remaining 10 percent of the time, enjoy a piece of dark chocolate, a frozen yogurt or a slice of pizza. This philosophy will help you satisfy hunger without feeling deprived.

Commit to a “red carpet” lifestyle.
Preparation for a special event starts with a commitment to work towards looking your best. Get your head in the game - you don’t get in shape by accident. Establish personal goals on paper, which will help you to read and visualize them each day. This way, when life throws you the inevitable curve ball, you can plan ahead to stay focused on what you want to achieve.

Strategy trumps will power.
To achieve your health and well-being goals, it’s important to have strategies for success. If you rely on will power alone, your fitness plan will ultimately fail. For example, if you dine out frequently for work, research the best restaurant and menu options in advance. If you are a late-night snacker, don’t work so hard to resist temptations- remove temptations from the house! Preemptive strategies for your biggest pitfalls will make it easier for you to stay on track.

Put your best foot forward.
Studies consistently show that people who start each day by eating a healthy breakfast are less likely to be overweight than those who don’t. There are several ways to prepare and enjoy a quick, healthy breakfast. Try an 8-ounce glass of 100 percent grapefruit juice and ½ cup of low-fat yogurt topped with low-fat granola or ½ cup of oatmeal. Not only will you have more energy, it may be easier to stay on your weight control plan because your metabolism is more likely to remain consistent throughout the day.

Get physical.
Vow to become active for at least thirty minutes a day, five to six days per week. For maximum efficiency in less time, spend three of the six days doing circuit-style weight training and three days doing cardio intervals.
