WHAT IS APRIL FOOL’S DAY?
Historians trace the beginning of the April Fool’s Day tradition to 1582 in France. When New Year’s Day was officially moved to January 1 with the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar, many people didn’t receive the news for several years and continued to celebrate the beginning of the new year on April 1. They were called ‘fools’ because of it, and this day soon became the day to play pranks on one another to poke fun at the people who were still celebrating New Year’s Day too late.
APRIL FOOL'S DAY AROUND THE WORLD
The tradition of playing pranks is shared in most of the Western world, and many people play light pranks and jokes on friends, family members, coworkers and, in some cases, their boss. Some historians believe that April Fool’s Day is actually just another ‘renewal festival’ that celebrates the end of the winter and return of spring. These festivals have been celebrated throughout history; Hilaria is celebrated in Rome in March; the Festival of Lud honors the Celtic god of humor in Northern Europe; and Holi is celebrated near the beginning of March in India.
