HIGHLIGHTING DARK HAIR

Tips for Highlighting Dark Hair!

If you have dark hair, you know how hard it is to obtain the perfect highlights. The perfect highlights are somewhere between a rich caramel color and a light golden brown color. Here are some secrets on how to get the perfect highlights for your dark hair:

HIGHLIGHTING TIPS

HIGHLIGHTING TIP #1: Less is more.

You don’t need to highlight your entire head to make an impact. Dark hair highlights look best when there is less. Ask your stylist for a few highlights around your face and in your fringes (bangs) for a face brightening boost. If you are doing at-home highlights, make sure you highlight super thin sections of hair so that you don’t end up with streaky strands.

HIGHLIGHTING TIP #2: At-Home highlighting tip.

Make sure that your highlighted strands look pale yellow before you shampoo out. If your hair is red, dark orange or yellow, it hasn’t processed long enough and needs a bit more time.

HIGHLIGHTING TIP #3: Toner is your friend.

Dark hair almost always needs to be toned. A toner or glaze will work well so that you can achieve the perfect color highlights.

  1. Apply the toner or glaze to well towel-dried hair and make sure to saturate strands completely.

  2. Let the toner or glaze sit on hair for about 10-20 minutes and then rinse.

  3. Your hair should look highlighted and healthy. If it still has a brassy tone to it after blow drying, feel free to repeat this step and leave the toner or glaze on for another 10 minutes.

HIGHLIGHTING TIP #4: Use shampoo made for highlighted hair.

Keep your highlights looking great with a shampoo specifically made for highlighted hair. One to try is Graham Webb Pure Blonde Color Enhancing Shampoo that keeps brassiness at bay. Another great highlight maintaining shampoo to use is L’Oreal Professional Colorist Collection in the color of your choice. This shampoo and conditioner series will help to maintain your highlights by depositing your choice of color every time you wash.

Remember to stick with a natural look if you have dark hair. Anything that is too blonde or too dramatic will look gaudy instead of gorgeous.
