Young Women Everywhere Await the Debut of Twilight, the Movie

Twilight, a new movie based on the top-selling novel by Stephanie Myers, is being anxiously awaited by its key audience, teenage girls, as well as other women in their 20’s and beyond; not to mention many teenager’s moms. Twilight, which opens in theaters on November 21, adds an unusual twist to the evergreen Romeo and Juliet story: the male lead in the movie, Edward Cullen, is a vampire. But he’s not just an old-fashioned, blood-sucking vampire. Edward, played by up-and-coming British actor Robert Pattinson, is described in the book as “the perfect man” who can stop a moving car with his bare hands. And as passionate as the romance between Edward and Bella is, there is no actual sex in the book or the film, making it just right for its teenage fan base.
THE STORY BEHIND TWILIGHT
Isabella “Bella” Swan, played by actress Kristen Stewart, a bit of a loner at her Phoenix, Arizona, high school, moves to rainy Forks, Washington to live with her father after her divorced mother remarries. The first day of class, Bella meets the gorgeous and mysterious Edward. After she learns that Edward and his family are vampires, Bella remains inexplicably attracted to Edward; although she is relieved to find that he drinks only animal, not human, blood. The two discover they are soul mates; Edward, who is immortal, of course, has waited more than 90 years for Bella. Yet he must resist the primal attraction of her scent, which could drive him into an uncontrollable frenzy.
Not to give away the rest, but suffice it to say that Bella and Edward’s forbidden and unconventional romance is riddled with many obstacles, including the appearance of a new clan of malevolent vampires in town. Critically acclaimed director Catherine Harwicke directed the breathtakingly beautiful film, with its brooding, atmospheric photography and special effects.
TWILIGHT’S LEADS ARE INSTANT STARS
Handsome Robert Pattinson, who played the ill-fated Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, was unprepared for his instant stardom. The 22-year-old English actor has just gotten used to his public appearances sending thousands of girls into a screaming frenzy. Having grown up watching American movies, Pattinson said it was no trouble learning an American accent for the role. More challenging, he says, was the stunt work involved in the movie. Despite an actual stunt double, Pattinson managed to injure himself in small ways throughout Twilight’s filming. He admits to being uncoordinated and “terrible at sports.”
Eighteen-year-old actress, Kristen Stewart, has the dark hair and delicate features of a movie heroine, and is best known for her role as Jodie Foster’s daughter in 2002’s Panic Room. She says playing Bella was easy because she is the kind of person that every girl can relate to, a tad insecure but someone who ultimately trusts herself. Stewart didn’t discover the "Twilight" books—there are four in the series—until she started making the movie, but she became an immediate fan. Already Stewart has been named AccessHollywood.com’s latest Rising Star.
