HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR CLOSETLearn to Organize, Maintain, and Shop in Your Own Closet!

Next time you find yourself with an afternoon full of nothing to do, grab an armful of clothes that you haven’t worn in a while and try them on. Decide if you would like to keep them (based on if the piece fits, is in style and does not need any major alterations or repairs). People tend to hold on to clothing with the hopes that they will lose the weight again, or because of sentimental reasons. Instead of taking up valuable space in your closet, try some other uses for them. For example, try making a blanket out of all those old tees as a good way to keep them around without taking up room in your closet. Put everything in a pile that you would like to save and make another pile of clothing that you can either give away or resell. Once you have decided what you want to save, try putting together new updated outfits with each piece to make them feel new again. It is a great way to actually go shopping in your closet. | ![]() |
Organization Tip #2: Merchandise It like Your Favorite Boutique
Your closet can get overwhelming when you don’t understand the layout and cannot find what you are looking for. You tend to forget about clothing and accessories you have bought and get into the routine of wearing the same outfit over and over again. When you visualize a boutique, the clothing is not crammed into whatever space they have left for it. It is all merchandised according to the type of clothing, the style and even sometimes the color. For example, with your tops section, begin with sleeveless and move on to short sleeve, ¾ sleeve, long sleeve, sweaters and even the longer tunics that care good to keep separate as well. Next, merchandise your denim, pants, shorts, skirts, dresses and outerwear. It is also a good idea to merchandise your accessories, including belts, handbags, scarves, shoes, jewelry, and even undergarments. There are amazing tools that allow you to keep your belongings looking nice as well as organized. |
Organization Tip #3: Use Space Saving Tools
Try to clean and maintain your closet about once a month as they can get easily cluttered and therefore need constant maintenance. There are some inexpensive tools to organize any closet, no matter the size and space available. Here are a few space-saving organization tips:
- Try a hanging rack that doubles as a shelving unit and makes it easy to see the folded clothing.
- Throw away those wire hangers and replace them with wood and padded hangers as a way to maintain the shape of the garment and ensure it won’t slip off.
- Canvas boxes, baskets and see-through drawers are a great way to stash away handbags, undergarments, shoes and even jewelry and keep them visible and super organized.
Closet Organization Tip #4: Don’t Pack Everything Away
Remember, it’s not about the weather. Many people stash away their clothes according to season, when they don’t realize they are putting away valuable clothing for all seasons. Layering is huge right now, so keep those tanks and tees around in the winter. Make a cute outfit using a tank top layered underneath a long sleeve shirt, a sweater or even a cardigan. Scarves are always great to have around as well. When the weather is cold they keep you warm, but when the weather is warm they accessorize any basic outfit. | ![]() |
