Hot Stone Spa TreatmentsRelief is a Stone’s Throw Away!
Massage is the most common therapy people think of when hot stones are mentioned. The current version of what we know as hot stone massage was introduced in 1993 in Tucson, Arizona. Basalt stones, which are smooth and flat and made of a
volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well, are heated, usually in water. The therapist then places the stones on various pressure points on your body. Often they are placed in your hands, on your back or between your toes. They may also perform your massage with a heated stone in hand. As it cools, it is replaced with another hot stone. The direct heat of the stones allows the muscles to really relax allowing greater manipulation than with regular massage. Warmth from the stones expands blood vessels, moving the blood around the body more quickly and sedating the nervous system.
If you suffer from a muscular injury or have muscle inflammation, cool marble stones are usually used in your therapy. Marble stones are found at the bottom of ancient oceans. They are known for these properties: to cleanse, remove stress and promote healing. Cold stones stimulate the nervous system, as they cause the blood vessels to contract. This increases the flow of waste materials through the body. This can encourage a more effective removal of toxins. Cool stone therapy refreshes the mind and balances the body. By alternating the hot and cool stones, every cell in the body is able to receive more oxygen and nutrients.
With the stones origin in the earth and the ocean, use of them in body treatments does wonders to realign us with nature and to nourish a sense of peace and calm. Our bodies long to relax, relieve stress and feel reenergized. Stone therapies provide a new twist on massage, reflexology and other treatments, allowing them to work for us in a new way. Stone treatments encourage renewal of the physical and spiritual balance in our lives, while they provide a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of our every day lives. If you’ve never experienced stone therapy, add it to your to do list for 2007. You’ll be glad you did!
