Brighten Up your World with Neon Nail Polish like Rihanna!
I remember how popular neon nails were in the ‘80s and now, like so many fashion and beauty trends, they’ve come back for an encore presentation! Edgy, funky celebs like Rihanna aren’t afraid to show off this bold summer nail polish trend - and you shouldn’t be, either! With dark polish colors having taken hold for the past few months, it’s great to have shiny, happy, bright nail lacquers to pair with our warm weather fashions. Here are a few nail polish tips to get you started on wearing this latest nail polish trend:
HOW TO WEAR NEON NAIL COLORS
Personally, I like shorter nails when wearing color on my nails. Here are some tips on how to prep your nails, apply nail polish, and really make them shine:
Shape your nails with a glass nail file, then use a buffing block along the tip of the nail to make sure you don’t have any loose nail pieces left behind.
Use a nail prep product such as OPI Bond Aid, which will ensure your nail bed is free of oils, nail polish remover, etc., and that your base coat and subsequent coats of polish will adhere well.
Next, apply a base or treatment coat over the Bond Aid. You might want to use a milky or beige toned ridge-filling type basecoat product, as it will really show off the brightness of neon polish.
Apply two coats of neon polish followed by a topcoat.
NEWEST NEON NAIL POLISHES
1. CHANEL on Robertson Blvd.
CHANEL has a brand spankin’ new boutique on trendy Robertson Blvd. in Los Angeles, and this collection of neon nail colors was created by Peter Phillips, Global Creative Director of CHANEL makeup, in celebration of that hot new location. These CHANEL nail polishes will be available online beginning in July, and limited quantities are available. You can sign up here to be on the wait list. You can pick them up at the Robertson Blvd location starting May 30th. The colors are: Melrose (pink), LA Sunrise (yellow), LA Sunset (orange), and Rodeo Drive (purple).
2. Essie Neon Collection
Essie’s neon nail polish shades have great names like Mini Shorts (orange), Shorty Pants (yellow, my favorite out of the collection), Bermuda Shorts (purple) and Short Shorts (pink). I am wearing the Shorty Pants on my toes (pictured above) funny enough, with sandals I bought at Kitson, on Robertson Blvd.
3. Nailtini Margarita Collection
This cool company has a website where you can customize your own polish and lip colors or buy colors they have created. Their new Margarita Collection gives us sparkling lemon lime Classic Rita, a pearly peachy tone called Mango Rita, and an awesome pink called Strawberry Rita. While these might not be considered classic “neon,” they are bright and cheery and look great alone or layered over the other neon polishes I’ve mentioned in this article. Go on, give it a try!
4. Claire’s Neon Nail Polish
You can always count on Claire’s to have all the trends covered, in their stores as well as online. This groovy green nail polish will look awesome as your summer pedicure choice with all your cool sandals. If you have the right attitude, you can rock it on your fingers, too!
I have to say that I love the new neon nail colors; they are flirty and fun, just like a summer day! Even if at first glance you think they are a little too much for you, try them just on your toes or layered as I suggested earlier. You might find that after you wear the layered look one week, you’ll be ready to go full-on neon the next!
