Oprah & Tolle Discuss Chapter 7: “Finding Who You Truly Are”
|
Eckhart Tolle also discusses how your perception of self is connected to how you feel you are treated by others. Instead of looking to others for gratification of your “needs” (praise, appreciation, love), look within yourself to discover it. Tolle says, in Chapter 7 of A New Earth, that knowing yourself is separate from knowing about yourself. Knowing about yourself is all “content.” Content consists of things that you identify with as your story - your relationships, living situation, past, and future – which in reality does not represent who you really are. Tolle also explains that by letting things be, without labeling or judging things as “good” or “bad,” you can be in alignment with the present moment, the Now. |
Discussion of Chapter 7:
- Tolle wrote, “Who you are requires no belief. In fact, every belief is an obstacle.” (pg. 189). What does this mean to you? Tell Us.
- Think about the saying, “Give and it will be given to you.” Ekhart Tolle suggests that you give others whatever you think they are withholding from you (praise, assistance, love, etc.). Try this for a couple of weeks and see what happens.
- Tolle says, “What matters to you is not necessarily what you say or believe, but what your actions and reactions reveal as important and serious to you.” (pg. 187) What are the things that upset and disturb you, and what does this reveal about you? Tell Us.

Chapter 7 of A New Earth discusses the fundamental question, “Who am I?” Tolle says that what matters to you in life is determined by your perception of who you are. Your reaction to people and challenging situations “is the best indicator of how deeply you know yourself.” (pg. 188)
